Black Star Square, also known as Independence Square, is Ghana’s most iconic public monument  a powerful symbol of freedom, unity, and national pride located in the heart of Accra.

Commissioned by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and completed in 1961, Black Star Square commemorates Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule. It was built to host national celebrations and civic events, including the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II that same year.

Located near Black Star Square and Independence Arch, Asomdwe Park is the final resting place of Ghana’s 3rd President of the Fourth Republic, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, who served from 2009 until his passing in 2012. The park was opened shortly after his burial and designed as a public space for remembrance and reflection.

Ussher Fort is a fort in Accra, Ghana. Ussher Fort is a historic Dutch fort in Jamestown, Accra, built in 1649 and later used as a prison  now restored as a museum and cultural center that preserves Ghana’s colonial and post-independence history.

The fort played a key role in the transatlantic slave trade, later serving as a colonial prison, and today stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
