AFRICA’s Nexus (“AFRICA’s Nexus”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is operated by Nairobi Nexus.

We respect your privacy and are committed to handling personal information responsibly. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use the AFRICA’s Nexus mobile application and related services, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the choices available to you.

By using AFRICA’s Nexus, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information We Collect

The information we collect depends on how you use AFRICA’s Nexus.

1.1 Account Information

When you apply for membership, register for an account, or use the service, we may collect information such as:

  • Full name
  • Email address
  • Password credentials in protected or hashed form
  • Account status and account role
  • Date of account creation
  • Last login information

We do not store your password in plain text.

1.2 Profile and Professional Information

AFRICA’s Nexus is designed to help members build professional connections. You may provide profile information including:

  • Full name
  • Professional role or job title
  • Company or organisation
  • City and country
  • Profile photograph
  • Professional biography
  • Professional profile or website URL
  • Professional or membership category
  • Investment interests
  • Sector interests
  • Geographic interests

Some profile information may be visible to other members of AFRICA’s Nexus depending on your profile settings and the functionality of the platform.

1.3 Membership Application Information

If access to AFRICA’s Nexus requires an application or approval process, we may collect:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Professional role
  • Location
  • Professional or membership category
  • Investment interests
  • Professional profile URL
  • Information or notes you voluntarily submit as part of your application

Authorised administrators may review this information for membership and access-management purposes.

1.4 Connections and Network Activity

When you interact with other members, we may process information about:

  • Connection requests
  • Accepted or declined connections
  • Your professional network
  • Member interactions
  • Saved items
  • Other activity necessary to provide networking functionality

1.5 Messages and Communications

If you use private messaging within AFRICA’s Nexus, we process:

  • Message content
  • Sender and recipient information
  • Conversation information
  • Message timestamps
  • Read status

Messages are processed so that we can provide the communication service, maintain conversation history, support safety and moderation where necessary, and investigate misuse when reported.

Please do not use AFRICA’s Nexus messages to transmit highly sensitive information unless necessary.

1.6 Opportunities and Events

When you interact with opportunities or events, we may process information including:

  • Opportunities you submit or interact with
  • Event participation or RSVP information
  • Saved opportunities or events
  • Related dates and activity information

Information you intentionally submit for publication may be visible to other AFRICA’s Nexus members.

1.7 Reports, Safety and Moderation Information

If you report another member, profile, message, opportunity, event or other content, we may collect:

  • The subject of the report
  • Your reason for reporting it
  • Additional details you provide
  • Review status
  • Administrative actions taken in response

We use this information to maintain platform safety, enforce our rules and investigate suspected misuse.

1.8 Notifications and Device Information

If you enable push notifications, we may process:

  • Device push-notification token
  • Device platform
  • Notification preferences
  • Notification delivery information
  • Notifications generated for your account

We use services such as Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service to deliver notifications to supported devices.

You can control notification permissions through your device settings and, where available, your AFRICA’s Nexus notification preferences.

1.9 Purchases and Access Entitlements

Where AFRICA’s Nexus provides paid or permanent access through an app store, we may process information necessary to verify and maintain your entitlement, such as:

  • Product identifier
  • Transaction identifier
  • Purchase status
  • Purchase date
  • Verification status
  • Store environment
  • Protected purchase tokens or transaction references

Payments made through Apple’s App Store or Google Play are processed by the relevant store provider. AFRICA’s Nexus does not receive or store your complete payment-card details from those transactions.

1.10 Technical, Security and Log Information

When you use AFRICA’s Nexus, our systems may automatically process technical information required to operate and secure the service, which may include:

  • IP address
  • Device or browser information
  • User-agent information
  • Request identifiers
  • Login and authentication activity
  • Error and operational logs
  • Security and administrative audit records

We use this information to maintain security, prevent abuse, investigate technical problems and operate the service reliably.

2. How We Use Your Information

We may use information collected through AFRICA’s Nexus to:

  • Create and manage your account
  • Review and administer membership applications
  • Provide and personalise your professional profile
  • Allow members to discover and connect with each other
  • Deliver private messages
  • Provide opportunities and events
  • Process RSVPs and saved items
  • Send service and push notifications
  • Verify purchases and access entitlements
  • Provide customer support
  • Prevent fraud, spam, abuse and unauthorised access
  • Investigate reports and enforce platform rules
  • Maintain security and technical reliability
  • Improve the operation and usability of AFRICA’s Nexus
  • Comply with applicable legal and regulatory obligations

We will not use personal information for materially different purposes without an appropriate legal basis or notice where required.

3. How Information Is Shared

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share or make information available in the following circumstances.

3.1 With Other AFRICA’s Nexus Members

Information you choose to include in your professional profile, and information you intentionally submit for member-facing features, may be visible to other members.

Private messages are intended only for the participants in the relevant conversation, except where access is reasonably necessary for safety, legal compliance, investigation of reported abuse or technical operation of the service.

3.2 With Service Providers

We may use trusted third-party providers to help operate AFRICA’s Nexus, including providers for:

  • Cloud infrastructure and hosting
  • Push notifications
  • Email delivery
  • File or image storage
  • Application distribution
  • App-store purchasing and verification
  • Security and technical infrastructure

These providers may process information only to the extent necessary to provide their services to us, subject to their respective terms and privacy obligations.

3.3 For Safety and Legal Reasons

We may disclose information where reasonably necessary to:

  • Comply with applicable law, regulation, court order or lawful request
  • Protect the rights, safety or property of AFRICA’s Nexus, its members or others
  • Investigate fraud, abuse, security incidents or unlawful activity
  • Enforce applicable agreements and platform rules

3.4 Business Transfers

If the organisation operating AFRICA’s Nexus is involved in a merger, acquisition, restructuring or transfer of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable privacy obligations.

4. Push Notifications

AFRICA’s Nexus may send notifications relating to activity such as:

  • Connection requests and updates
  • New messages
  • Opportunities
  • Events
  • Other important account or service activity

Push notifications are delivered using platform notification services, including Firebase Cloud Messaging and Apple Push Notification service where applicable.

You may disable push notifications at any time through your device’s notification settings.

Disabling push notifications does not necessarily disable notifications displayed inside the AFRICA’s Nexus application.

5. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including operating the service, maintaining security, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements and satisfying legal or regulatory requirements.

Different categories of information may have different retention periods.

When an account is deleted, we will delete or anonymise personal information associated with the account where reasonably possible and required by applicable law.

Certain information may need to be retained after account deletion where necessary for legitimate purposes such as:

  • Legal or regulatory obligations
  • Fraud prevention
  • Financial and purchase records
  • Security and audit records
  • Resolving disputes
  • Enforcing legal rights
  • Preventing reuse of previously consumed or refunded purchase entitlements

Where information must be retained, we will limit its use to the purpose requiring retention.

6. Account Deletion

You may request deletion of your AFRICA’s Nexus account using the account-deletion functionality available within the application or by contacting us.

Account deletion may result in permanent loss of your profile, connections, conversations and other account information.

Some information may remain where retention is required or permitted by applicable law or necessary for security, fraud prevention, financial record keeping or similar legitimate purposes.

7. Your Privacy Rights and Choices

Depending on the laws applicable to you, you may have rights relating to your personal information, including the right to:

  • Be informed about how your information is used
  • Request access to your personal information
  • Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information
  • Request deletion of eligible personal information
  • Object to or restrict certain processing
  • Withdraw consent where processing relies on consent
  • Request portability of eligible information
  • Make a complaint to an appropriate data protection authority

You may also update certain profile information directly within AFRICA’s Nexus.

We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain privacy requests.

To exercise a privacy right, contact us using the details in Section 14.

8. International Data Processing

AFRICA’s Nexus may use service providers whose infrastructure is located in countries other than the country in which you live.

Where personal information is transferred across borders, we take reasonable steps to ensure that appropriate protections are used as required by applicable law.

9. Security

We use reasonable administrative, organisational and technical safeguards designed to protect information against unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure or destruction.

These measures may include access controls, protected authentication credentials, encrypted communications, restricted administrative access and security monitoring.

However, no internet-connected service or method of electronic storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

You are responsible for keeping your account credentials confidential and should notify us if you believe your account has been compromised.

10. Children’s Privacy

AFRICA’s Nexus is intended as a professional networking platform and is not designed for young children.

We do not knowingly seek to collect personal information from children in circumstances where parental or guardian consent is legally required.

If you believe that a child has provided personal information to AFRICA’s Nexus contrary to applicable law, please contact us so that we can investigate and take appropriate action.

11. Third-Party Links and Services

AFRICA’s Nexus may contain links to websites, professional profiles, events or other services operated by third parties.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party websites or services. We encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing them with personal information.

12. Tracking and Advertising

AFRICA’s Nexus does not currently use personal information for cross-app or cross-website advertising tracking.

If our practices change materially, we will update this Privacy Policy and make any disclosures or obtain any permissions required by applicable law and platform policies.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in AFRICA’s Nexus, our data practices, technology, service providers or legal requirements.

When we make material changes, we may provide notice through the application or other appropriate means.

The date at the top of this Privacy Policy indicates when it was last updated.
